That they're grateful to get anything. I volunteer at a soup kitchen, and never once heard anyone complain about the fact that they have someone else coat or shoes. And why fill up our already overflowing landfills with things that are in good shape and can be reused, simply because we can afford to get something else? The less fortunate are happy to have nice things in good shape, even if they used to belong to someone else. Why do you assume that they would feel badly about that? They would feel worse if they were freezing and had no coat at all. By the way, when I can, I pick up new things for a needy family down the block - but they are just as grateful for my "cast-offs" as they are for the new.
