If I use the Operating System CD for Windows XP Home that came with my computer will it delete all my pictures

Question

I have about 2 years of pictures stored on that computer.. not to mention bookmarks, files, etc. Will it wipe out all of this information if I use the Operating System CD?

I am trying to fix it I get an error mesage that reads:
Windows could not start because the follwing file is either missing or corrupt:

\system32\mtoskrnl.exe (sp?)
Please re-install a copy of the above file

ok but if windows doesn't load and the computer doesn't even load HOW AM I SUPOSED TO BACK UP MY FILES? And the reason it's 2 years worth of stuff on there is because when my laptop needed to reinstall, I transfered everything to the desktop. It's only about 6 months old.. I just never transfered it back because I thought since it was so new there would be no problems!! After this im buying a personal hard drive!!

Burn the images on a CD before doing anything major to your operating system.

When you mean Using the operating system CD, do you mean formating and re installing windows?

There are 2 types of re isntalling, a complete reinstall or an update re install. The complete re install wipes out everything, the update (or fix) will overwrite all of the operating system files and should keep your existing documents (from what I've heard) but I wouldn't trust that.

To be safe , back up al of the bookmarks (Favourites) all of your images and documents onto a CD or DVD disc, and then update your computer.

If you do not need to update your computer, it wont hurt your computer to pop the operating system CD into the drive, you can browse the OS disc without harming anything.

It will if you are reformatting and reinstalling windows! If someone has directed you to do a complete reforamt and install you better think twice! You will not only lose all your software but also all the files and drivers used to keep your system hardware running! You will be on here for two months tryin to iron problems out! State the reason why you think you need to do this!

If you moved your files to non-Windows created folders, you should be alright. Just select the option where you don't partition/reformat the hard drive you're installing to. There is an installation option which allows you to re-install Windows without wiping out your hard drive.

However, I'd suggest that you back up your pictures beforehand.....just to be safe.

Back up all the personal files to a Firewire or USB external hard drive! If they are less than several CDroms, or a DVD, you could burn them... I wonder that you haven't backed up in 2 years!!!

Yep, if you insert that CD, and it comes up with a re-install plan, and you click the 'yes' it will all be gone for good, forever!!!

Unless you want to spend about $2,600 on drive recovery... or, you know how to recover in Linux, using a LiveCDrom...

it depends on why u want to use the cd, if its to upgrade from eg, windows ME to xp, yeah wouldnt be a problem, the only way the files would be deleted if u choose format during the install.

It depends on what you plan on doing with it, if you plan on reinstalling windows, yes, it will delete EVERYTHING. If you're just reinstalling a coupple programs, no, you're fine.

load the system in safemode , restart the system then keep tapping the (F8) KEY ,fast to you come to a menu then move up to safe mode and hit the enter key then hit the enter key again then your see a lot of tex on screen , just wait to it goes to the user account login screen then login by the admin user account , then put a cd(r) in the re writer drive right click on the drive then click on explorer , then move your files to that open window , then on the top of the open window

file write these files to cd

then click on ok

now the files will burn to the cd(r) disk when you done that use more cd (r) cds and back up all your files & work ,

if you put the Operating System CD for Windows XP Home , in the drive and boot up and format the pc you lost everything you need to back up all your files and bookmarks, files, you also need your drivers to your pc have you got the drives cd that came with the pc and the motherboard cd as well
