Antidepressants can cause weight gain. I'd rather be mentally stable, though, than skinny.

One thing at a time girl!

Deal with your Depression and Panic Attacks first.

Some pills can make you add on the pounds, so can comfort eating but weight can be concentrated on once everything else in your life is more settled.

Are you having counceling alongside with the tablets? It's advisable if you do. The whole idea is to find out the core reason for what triggered off the depression and panic attacks in the first place. Then you will be able to learn how to deal with these situations. This does all take time, it's not an overnight thing! When the time is right the Dr will advise you how to come off the anti-depressants. Only come off of them when and how he tells you!

Don't stand on the scales every night - that will just reinforce your depression!!

One thing that will help, which may sound a bit daft at this moment in time, is exercise. Not purely as a way to loose weight but as a way to help your mood too!

Often the body is storing too much adrenaline and exercise gets it, quite literally, out of our system. Exercise also produces seretonin which makes us feel good - the same stuff that's in chocolate!

Only, choose something you enjoy doing! No point going jogging if you hate running! Find something you will feel comfortable doing on you own or if you have a supportive friend perhaps you could ask them along to keep you company!

Above all, please do not bee too hard on yourself. It's a bit of a cliche but take each day, hour or minute as it comes!

sometimes when we take certain pills they lower our metabolic which makes us put on weight. If you are always hungry you could try eating healthily and only eat foods from the free section when eating between meals such as salad. You could also take up walking this helps increase your metabolic weight and exercise may go some way to help with your depression. I too suffered from depression in the past and had to take pills for a while, these helped me to calm down and work out what I needed to do. When I was depressed I used to worry about every little thing I did or said 'wrong' I used to beat myself up over this. I had to teach myself that some of the things that happened were not my fault. I tried positive affirmations 'I am the best me I can be' I forgave myself for any past mistakes and learnt to love myself. I hope this helps. You may find that when you sort out your depression the weight will sort itself out. I thought I would never get out of my depression and I managed it you can too. Good luck.

babe try to get off them!!! I know it's easier said than done but they really don't work in long term. My best friend was taking them and i watched her slowly turning into a vegetable. And yes antidepressants can make u gain weight. The best way of fighting the depression is exercise. I'm talking from experience. Just start off slowly and easy and you'll see how much better you'll feel. All i know is those pills are no good for u!
Good luck!

I've had the same problem for years, on and off. To cut a long story short, the anti depressants didn't really help because weight issues were partly the cause of my depression. I stopped taking the anti-depressants with the support of my GP and the weight started to come off. I feel a lot better about myself now and the depression has certainly eased off to a fair extent. The first couple of months were tough because it took that long to see any significant results in weight loss, but I'm so glad I persevered with it. Ask your GP if there are any alternative anti-depressants you could take that won't give you the munchies - good luck with it, if I can do it so can you. :)

My you are in a vicious circle, was it the weight that brought on the depression,? or the pills that brought on the weight ?, either way you need to do something about it. My guess is the worry about the pills is cancelling out any good they should be doing you.
Go to see your doctor, tell him you are worried that these pills will cause weight gain, maybe you could manage without them, get off them gradually, with your doctors help.
You will not get over the depression or panic attacks if you are forever worrying about the pills that are supposed to keep it in check !!!!!!!!!!!!

It may not be the pills that are to blame. It could be that your eating carbohydrate rich food. Carbohydrates convert essential brain chemicals into a feel good sensation. This is more commonly known as " Comfort Eating " I've been there myself having had anxiety problems and also being on anti-depressants.The way I get around it is to eat fruit when the food craving gets too bad. Anyway I wish you the best of health.

anti depressants are the absolute worse thing on earth
I gained over a hundred pounds, I am on disability, so that proves I wasn't over eating, I didn't have any money to buy extra food
the weight gain for me started after I was on the meds six months, gradually at first and then at the two year mark, wham, sixty pounds in three or four months, so I quit, now I am finding out a whole lot more ailments caused by this medication as my brain becomes functional again, here is a really good website

Honestly hun you're not doing anything wrong. Stick with the diet and the pills for your health. All you need is a counsellor. If the doc has already put you on the meds he will refer you to a good counsellor. With that little bit of extra support you should be able to find your way out of your vicious circle. Once you've got a good line of communication with the counsellor you will be able to come off the tablets and just have your diet and your counsellor. It is awful trying to lose weight because you become obsessed, the trick is to be in control of the obsession, i promise you ..... a good counsellor will help. :-)

I feel as fat as a big fatty too! Sod it. I'm going to get back in the gym because that's the only thing which keeps my ENORMOUS belly under control. Stop weighing yourself its no measure of fat or thin and its bad BAD for the old self esteem. I combined pills with counselling and it worked wonders over a period of months.Good people will love you nomatter what size your jeans are. xx

Speak to you gp if you are concerned!
have you thought of trying psychotherapy- its a type of hypnotherapy and is available in some areas on the NHS it gets to th root of your depression!
as for your weight i'm sure that adds to your anxiety- try and oush yourself a little each day to do a few sit ups or go for a walk- borrow a dog if you haven't got one!
