I gotta stop asking these catholic questions...I get sick of reading about them. It's all about SICK SICK MEN building power structures which feed upon the weakened in the most insidious ways and I'm tired of even thinking of them.

singing is a long Biblical tradition and the Catholic church cannot take credit (or blame)

God sang in Zephaniah
Jesus and the apostles sang a hymn after the last supper
David wrote songs and played the harp and many Psalms encourage the use of musical instruments or singing especially singing a NEW SONG
Mirian, Moses sister played the tamporine and sang
there is the song of Moses and the Lanb in Revelation
Angles sang at creation
there are lots of songs in the book of Revelation sung in heaven
Paul and SIlas sang in a really dark jail (probably badly) at MIDNIGHT and God honored it with an earthquake!!! JAIL HOUSE ROCK!!!!! where everyones chains fell off and everyons door broke open but NO ONE left... why leave all the action was there in the prsison and they wanted to hear Paul's message

When I was still in high school, I remember serving and joining in the choir and I found it quite more solemn and heart wrenching as I feel the closeness of God while expressing the written words with notes and tones. I would answer yes to your question about emotional bond but not to the money. Besides, we can never deny the effects of music in our lives as we listen to it. What brings in more money however is not in the singing but often on the said intentions for the collection. If there is a fund raising to build a bigger church or a beautiful altar, to support the poor neighborhood, the motivation is what drew the congregation to give more.

In his letter to the Church in Ephesus, Paul wrote:

But be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another (in) psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and playing to the Lord in your hearts, giving thanks always and for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to God the Father. (Ephesians 5:18-20)

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states:

The musical tradition of the universal Church is a treasure of inestimable value, greater even than that of any other art. The main reason for this pre-eminence is that, as a combination of sacred music and words, it forms a necessary or integral part of solemn liturgy.

The composition and singing of inspired psalms, often accompanied by musical instruments, were already closely linked to the liturgical celebrations of the Old Covenant.

The Church continues and develops this tradition started by the Church in Ephesus.

And finally as the old quotation attributed to St. Augustine goes, "He who sings prays twice."

With love in Christ.

The Catholic Church has been singing for a LONG time. Personally, I enjoy the chants.

Some of the oldest Christian documents were sung. In fact, John's Gospel is clearly meant to be sung when read in Greek. The Church has always sung its services.
