I have an XBox set to 1080i output through HD component cables connected to component input on my Onkyo HT-S790, and a high-end component cable between the receiver and my 1080p DLP TV, but get poor, grainy picture. However, if I run the output from the XBox DIRECTLY to the TV, I get a sharp, crisp HD picture. Is the receiver capable of handling this signal?

You've pretty much answered that yourself. Running analog video signals (especially HD, with it's high bandwidth) through an audio receiver is never a good idea. It's handy, for switching audio/video at the same time, but doesn't help video quality as you've found out the hard way.

These units put out about 110 w/Ch. ,which is a lot. Unless you live alone, you will never get the benefit of all that power. And the price. I looked up a 7:1 surround system, like that( onkyo) it was $ 948.00 Here's the thing, I paid $575.00 incl. tax for a Panasonic 800 watt 5:1 Dolby surround system 5-disc CD/DVD player, speaker stands for the 2 front & 2 rear speakers, delivered. It sounds better to me than a lot of high end sets. Most people can not believe the clarity & nice bass tone. On DVD on Dolby surround, it's just awesome. Just a thought. But, if you have your heart set on one of the ones you showed, either one would blow you away, literally.

Your Onkyo must be one of the cheaper ones that has a not so great video switching section. Buying a higher end Onkyo, Denon or Yamaha should fix your problem.
