I live in the USA.
My maiden name is Drost, and my father said he had someone to trace the name back to the Netherlands to Vandrost, but that is where the trail ended.
We know it's German, and dad thinks there may have been another name change during the move from Germany to the Netherlands, like they were running. It was right before all hell broke loose with Hitler.
Has anyone heard of these names, or know someone who has?

Hi. The name is very much Dutch. I have some Drosts in my family tree and the name Drost was the same in the Netherlands. It didn't have the Van in front of it. My Drosts are from Michigan around Ottawa, Kent, and Newaygo Counties. I would be happy to help you trace your Drosts of you want to send me an E-mail of what you already know. I do have access to Dutch Drosts all the way back to at least 1811. Drop me a line at krystalou812@yahoo.com if you would like some help.

Blessings to you and your family.

Drost is a common Dutch name. If you have some information on your Dutch ancestors you can probably do some research on Genlias ( http://www.genlias.nl/ ).
There is a "Drost families worldwide" website at http://www.drost-families.org/english.htm that may be helpful.
For more information on Dutch genealogy you may want to read my article "Trace your Dutch roots online" at http://www.van-kampen.org/roots/online.htm .
