You need to take him to a dermatologist. My mom took me and it worked wonders and prevented scarring. I took my daughters when the time came.
Sometimes prescription medicines are necessary, some are topical (put on the skin) and some are pills. Obviously I can't say what your son needs, except to say the advice of a professional.
Most insurance plans WILL cover acne treatment for teens.
BTW...proactive doesn't work for me either..it just depends on the person

I struggled with acne for years and I finally found the solution that works for me. We have been fooled, tricked, deceived, and just plain lied to. It's time that someone put a stop to it, and everyone learn the truth!
Those of us who suffer from acne have usually been given 2 choices and neither of them work:
1. Over the counter remedies such as cleansers, creams, ointments, etc. These things have been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.
2. Go see a doctor and or dermatologist. They will generally prescribe prescription drugs which include topicals and or antibiotics. This, too, has been proven over and over again not to work. Why? It does not address the root cause of the problem.
I found a step-by-step program that cured my acne and it has never come back. It is amazing and doesn’t use any drugs or doctors. The truth is that acne can be cured…if we know the secret the doctors and drug companies don’t want us to know.
There is a great website: http://cure-my-acne.info/3daycure/ that has all the details. I really suggest you check it out and see if it works as well for you as it did for me.

the only thing that has worked for me is Acne Free its sold at walmart for 18.48 it comes with the same stuff as proactiv but its much better and it really works and don't dry out the skin at all so try that and if u don't see a change in 4 months try the retin_A and other stronger prescriptions

Pro-Active is a bunch of celbrity hype that got nobody I know anywhere. You should feel proud that you spend so much money on crap like that.
A bottle of Nutragena Acne Wash (doesn't burn, doesn't scar) will take care of it in a few days. The end.

It didn't work for a couple friends of mine either; try accutane - he'd have to go the dermotologist. It'll dry him up for awhile, but it will never come back after the treatment, it's only about 3 months.

well my friend told me she uses that and she said at first it really makes you break out but then after that its suposed to clear up! either try using it for a bit longer or switch to another less expensive brand... like st. ives apricot scrub or neutrogena products! they work great! good luck

your best bet is to see a dermatologist. He may need an antiboitic as well as a prescription topical medication.
