The FAA does not allow cellphones, radios, or tvs, on during flight, it would not mess up the aircraft, but instead will mess up everyone connected to the cell phone tower that you are on, since you are higher than the cell tower. Everyone connected to the celltower would hear your conversation in the backround.

I don't know about safe but it is strictly forbidden. Most cellphones do have an airplane mode. That way you can still play games or get the time but not use the actual phone.

Its safe...well its now proven that most (like 99%) of cell phones DO NOT interfere with the planes electronics, but because of that 1%, airlines still forbid to using cell phones, as newer and newer phones are coming out with different frequinces. Basicly its safe, but they won't allow you to talk on the phone in the air ( but i was still playing Tetris on my phone, they didnt care ;) )

Oh wait, just realised YOU are trying to call to your dad.....His phone probably wont get any reseption

When boarding an airplane, you get instructions to turn of your cell phone (it can interfere the control panel of the aircraft). So, no it is not possible to call your dad on his cell phone as long as he is inside the plane.

No it is not safe - there is some question about the frequency of various phones interfering with the airplane's navigation. They will not allow you to use your cellphone after takeoff.

No you should use the airfone. Cell phones CAN affect the instruments that the aircraft uses to maintain its course.

They tell you to turn your phone off for a reason! If your father is on the plane now, you can't call him since his phone is MOST probably off.

I am sure your father made it home safely or to whatever destination he was going to, as I write this. I am sure you missed him and wanted to hear his voice. And no, cellphones cannot be used on any aircraft, anywhere at any time. And it is c-e-l-l-p-h-o-n-e , not cellAphone and a-i-r-p-l-a-n-e not airPLANE.
