It depends on what time you are having the shower.
For example if it were from 11 to the 1 o'clock area then lunch would be expected to be provided.
If it is around seven when most people have dinner then dinner would be expected.
If the shower is between the times of 2 and 6 then a meal is not expected. Simple finger foods would do. A cheese ball with crackers, some little BBQ wienies, punch if you like punch(I don't so i wouldn't provide it) or other drinks.
Since the party is in the time frame when most people don't eat, they would already be full and just maybe have the munchies.
If your shower does fall on a meal time (noon or 7) then in the invitations be sure to include that SNACKS will be provided so that your guests will know that they should not come thinking a full meal is provided. Unless of course you want to provide a full meal, which is costly.
But no matter what time it is be sure to have cake of course! And for people who don't like cake but want something sweet, sit some strawberries out or another type of fruit with a fruit dip.
Good Luck and Congrats!!

I think the best thing to have at a baby shower is trays, and you can either make them yourself, or pick some up at the deli in your local supermarket. For example, a meat and cheese tray, a fruit tray, and a veggie tray. Then have the cake and you are set.
That way people can snack and still move around and chat with others and be social.

it depends on how many people you invite. if it is for more than 10 or 20 people, it will take longer to prepare.
sliced vegetables with a sauce (bought in the store) or made at home from sour cream and herbs.
tuna or salmon sandwiches.
cheese slices.
vegetable salad with seperate dressings.
store bought cookies, wafers, etc.
water, pop and coffee to drink.
if you have someone to help you with this, it can take less effort and not much time.

Little smokeys that are all ready cooked all you have to do is heat them in a crockpot with BBQ sauce, finger sandwiches, mints, peanuts, cheese and crackers. I used all this food for my sister-in-law's shower last year. It turn out good. Don't forget the cake and punch.

~ Any kind of pasta bake. You cook your pasta noodles add spaghetti sauce, & mix. Place in a large baking dish and cover with cheese. Bake til cheese is melted. This is cheap and easy and it makes a lot.
~ Lunch meat and cheese trays.
~ Fried chicken
~ Fruit salad
~ Fruit and or Veggie trays

At my baby-shower we had a crock pot of sloppy joe sauce, (that was made the night before), pasta salad, a veggie tray with dip, and chips. It went over very well, and of course cake and drinks.

cut up kielbasa, put in crock pot, add a bottle of BBQ sauce and a can of chunk pineapple. It only takes 2 minutes to put together and a few hours to heat-it's always the first to go.
buy frozen meatballs put in crock pot-add spaghetti sauce takes the same time as the kielbasa
