Why don't you just ask the individual "outright" if he or she is gay. You are being very blunt however, you also eliminating the guessing game. But truthfully speaking---if you have to ask....then he or she probably is. Don't second guess yourself. Follow your first mind.

Ask the co-worker if he/she wants to go to lunch sometime and you should be able to tell from there. If you still are not sure, after you have befriend your co-worker ask him/her if in fact he/she is gay. Why beat around the bush? Don't sweat the small stuff.

If you're looking to ask them out just be casual about it. I don't mean asking them if they are gay but ask them to go out for a drink or coffee and just let it go from there. Get to know them. Just be careful and sure of yourself since you know them from work. I'm assuming you're hoping they are gay? Good Luck!!!!

Tell him that he has gained a lot of weight; if he winces like a woman, he is gay. slap him on the buttock in a friendly way, if he looks like he's been raped, he is gay.
