Its true. Its a standing joke where I work.
We reckon its coz of baldness due to high testosterone levels. And its the high testosterone levels that makes men more likely to be police officers in the first place. Men with high testosterone levels engage in more risky behaviour. Dunno bout the gum.I dont eat it. Maybe its the testosterone thing again, getting twitchy.

As previously mentioned, we are required to have fairly short hair (above the collar and ears in Met). I had my hair shaved off at training school for a laugh but I looked like a prick so grew it back to my classic Hitler Youth-esque side parting. I chew gum because we can't smoke in front of the public. And because I'm frightfully middle class so need something to make me more 'street'...

Many of them do have bald heads. Many shave either because it is easier to keep maintained or looks nicer. As we all know many law enforcement personnel are also former military. I think it also has to do with wearing a hat all the time. I know quite a few of them who should shave it instead of the comb over or the u shaped ring around their heads. Many losing hair should give it all up & shave. Those looks I previously described are not flattering! As for the gum chewing I don't know a lot who do unless they quit smoking. Many I know actually dip or use snuff which is an even dirtier habit. At least gum chewers have fresh breath!!

Not sure about the gum thing, but short hair is always a requirement for patrol officrs (drug and vice officers get cut some slack so they blend in with the population). The local police department permits beards.

Also, short hair means a bad guy can't pull it during a brawl. Think about it.

Some police officers have shaved head because it looks neat, others have shaved heads because they are prior military and it is easier to maintain. Some police officers chew gum because they smoke cigarettes and can not smoke when they are on duty

Noone in my nick has a shaven head, and few of us chew gum when around members of public.
And for the twats saying we're all tossers, try and do our job you idiot. You'd probably be eaten alive by the scumbags we have to deal with night and day.

Wow. Ok, so, if someone shaves their head and chews gum, it's to look "hard"?
What if the guy just happens to be bald? Does that count? 'Cause my dad's bald and he loves to chew gum... but he's not a cop. He's a doctor...
Personally, I haven't met enough shaved-head, gum-chewing cops to discern why they do that (shave their heads and/or chew gum).
I suspect a shaved head is easy to maintain, and chewing gum is tasty.

I am a police officer and in our department we are required to be "well groomed" so many of us just shave it all off (I don't). It also helps keep you cool when we are training or working out. In the rare case we get in a fight it is nice to not have to worry about your hair being pulled but this is not the primary reason as we try to avoid physical fights.

They will all normally have short (very) short hair. This is because they don't want anyone grabing thier hair in a fight.

chew gum, that one I don't know about, most of the officers I knew didn't
