We used to have chocolate sponge cake and bright green minty custard! THE BEST! Especially with skin on the top...
The worst was probably luncheon meat fritters. Ergh, greasy! And peas, because they were always those tinned marrowfat ones. Once this lad flicked a pea across the table and by sheer fluke, it got stuck up another lad's nose. Watching the dinner lady squeeze it out was hilarious...

Best memories of school dinners don't exist.
Worst memories include liver with tubes, mashed potatoes covered with water in the serving pan, meat of almost any description, gristle, margarine, tapioca pudding, overcooked vegetables, swede with hairy bits in it. The list goes on. Was in the 60s mind.

In the late 40,s they started school meals. I went for week but refused to go after. The mashed potatoes were served out of white enamel containers that looked like buckets with lids on. I told my mother they was serving us pig swill, I said I would rather have jam and bread !!!!!

the worst memory was being told by the principal that everybody had to eat every thing on their plate. This was in third grade. On the menu was stewed tomatoes and stewed prunes. In hindsight I should have refused to eat them. My parents would have come looking for me by 8 p.m.
the best memory was Fridays in the sixth grade. I was on the cafeteria crew. And it was all you can eat chicken-fried steaks, green beans, and chocolate pudding.

Best: Pizza and wedges (very rare, usually reserved for open days)
Worst: Any casserole and spaghetti hoops, resulting in a sloppy mixture of the two that tasted revolting - only a school kitchen would put those two together

The week I started having school dinners I was delighted to find that if they had leftovers we could go back for more - I went back for 7th's.
In primary school we had to eat everything on the plate, or the whole school had to wait until we did finish. I had a lot of trouble eating sardines. Later I found I had terrible burning sensations in my throat from the oil & juices, maybe because of allergies.

Worst - has to be lumpy custard - and being forced to eat it by the dinner ladies, the thought, sight or taste can still make me go cold and gag at the memory!
Best - has to be the lack of nutritious food and overwelming choice of junk - set me up for life!!

My worst was being told I had to finish lumpy ice-cream scopped mashed potato before I could leave the hall early.
The best was throwing up the aforementioned lumpy mashed potato all over the teacher.
