I would probably bombard everyone I thought might have some influence with letters and e-mails and make sure everyone knows about this miscarriage of justice, and hope someone more powerful than I would take some positive action.

well - how would that I know for a fact?. I don't know for a fact that the neighbor I have is wonderful.
I had a fabulous neighbor once, turned out he was a serial rapist that would attach his victims to car batteries.
I would, however, be willing to speak to the authorities about the man that I know and offer love and support to his family. Possibly cook them a meal (without pork)
That would be big for me since I HATE to cook.
