I have no living relative who knows why, is there any way of find ing out what he was mentioned in despatches during World War II for?

Contact the Records Office of his regiment/corps/ship/station whatever... or the ex-serviceman's association (which service? you don't say) via the MoD or via the assoc's website. Proof of your relationship might be necessary in some cases. However, if the Mention was in a Secret activity you might never get to know anything at all. As Yahoo! says: Search the Web! You could contact a military museum, they will be able to give you guidance.
Try to see if you can find one related to his regiment, or something like this.
Good luck, I'm sure your grandfather would be pleased that he is remembered.

My great grandad signalled under fire and got mentioned, he must have done something pretty fool-hardy.
