If you buy anything from a pets tore, you are a fool. Those puppies are produced in puppy mills where the parents are confined in small spaces, receive no regular medical care, bred until they die, and the breeder could care less about about the genetics and heridtary health problems.
A well-bred and carefully bred dog from a responsible breeder who knows their bloodlines, knows the genetic history, goes to great trouble to avoid hereditary problems an provides superlative care for their animals will run you $700 - $1000 for a pet quality puppy (which they will required to be spayed or neutered) and up to several Thousands for a top-flight show or perfomance prospect.
Also checkout breed rescues which usually charge fron $250 -500 deoending upon the breed and the amount of care invested in the dog. You can link to the following list from here:

I just paid $600 for my German Shepherd puppy, but then I checked out a few breeders first to make sure the parents were OFA hip and elbow certified and to make sure the pups had the characteristics I wanted in one. We got a beautiful Shepherd puppy, he's 4 months old and weighs 50 lbs right now. But if I were you I'd check out the rescue organizations first and the animal shelter, you never know if a good Shepherd has been taken in there and just needs a home.

Specific breeds of dogs cost different amounts based on your location (big cities tend to be more expensive), the popularity of the breed in that location (example, coonhounds are more popular in the south), the number of breeders in the area & the qualifications of the breeder.
If you are looking for an AKC registered, top bloodline championship GSD, you will expect to pay more than for a pretty puppy that has papers from a responsible breeder who is not showing, and even less from someone who simply created a litter of puppies because they felt like it.
It is best to investigate & find a responsible breeder, especially for this breed since there are genetic health issues that breeders should screen for & give you a health guarantee against. You can start with www.akc.org to find breeders in your area.
Make sure that it was a planned breeding, that they knew their bloodlines & were careful about the health background of both the dam & stud, and that they are raising the puppies with proper socialization & health maintenance. A good breeder will want to screen you as a puppy buyer as well, to make sure you will provide a good home environment, & should be open to providing references of past puppy buyers, as well as information on showing, breeding, activities if you are interested in pursuing any of that with your dog.
Based on that, to make sure you get a wonderful healthy puppy, you may pay a bit more than the lower priced ads in the newspaper classifieds, but those are a good place to start to see what the average price is for German Shepherd puppies in your area.
Good luck bringing home your new family member!

I charge anywhere from $500 to $1500. This depends on the breeding, bloodlines, structure and movement of the pups, ect. If there is a monorchid in the litter, they might go for less. What are you looking for? German working, German show, American show, Czech, Slovak, ect...
