I've tried reading a little about the topic, but what's the real meat of existentialism? Is it just we exist, nothing really matters so there is no good or evil? Or what?

I do believe that our bodies are simply vessels for our being.
If you look at it like this then it makes more sense...
If God is in everyone of us then humans, animals, aliens (if they exist) are all part of God. Meaning that God is not really an entity, but we are all from a source and will return.

Now, when we are born as whatever type of being we are then we are seen as an individual, but out of the flesh we are a collective energy. When we die I believe we once again lose identity of ourselves.

I do think that some people carry negative energy and others positive and that is what you call good and evil.

There is much to learn about this field of study, but I thought I would share my wisdom with you.

Peace...

We exist in isolation, each individual free to make choices in this cruel and hostile Universe. There is nothing but existence and experience. Nietzsche defines experience as consequences of freedom, survival being the measure of success.

This is sort of the "reality show" version of why we are here. Lacking any evidence for god, the existentialists assume people act only out of self interest, making life a tougher proposition for everyone.

It sucks as a way to think about life.

It's the study of why we're here, whether we're even here or not, and most importantly, why we are the way we are. Wild stuff, really. Spin your head around.
