It all depends on the speed. Gasoline cars have been crashing for years and very few (percentage wise) have caught fire or exploded. CNG cars have very heavy tanks that could tear off there moorings at higher speed collisions and could tear of valves and leak high pressure gas. The only good thing is that natural gas is lighter than air so it goes strait up (unless your in a tunnel or other enclosed space).

Since the fuel tank for compressed natural gas is a pressure vessel, it must meet higher impact standards than an automobiles standard thin walled metal gas tank. So the natural gas vehicle should be safer in a collision.

i would say gaoline. compressed anything is a bomb waiting to go off. i believe gasoline would be safer on impact. just think of what happens to houses when natural gas explodes! that would be compressed natural gas.

Anything compressed (under pressure) would explode on the right impact before a regular gasoline car...

Well gasoline will not burst upon impact without spark like natural gas will but its not really the flame thats gonna kill its the impact itself most of the time.

not so shure about cng, but i saw photos of a Volvo on propane that was hit by a train and the only identifiable part was the propane tank, mobile compressed fuel tanks have to satisfy the "safety Nazis " and the I'm suing you freaks in the u.s.a. so they are safer than the sheet metal gasoline tanks , remember the pinto !

My mom had a CNG motor vehicle for artwork one time. The CNG could activate after a undeniable velocity. in any different case the automobile ran on gasoline. That motor vehicle have been given somewhat stable gasoline mileage. despite if, finding CNG develop into demanding. the automobile could die on the on ramps and individuals could turn her off as though she develop into intentionally slowing down. She could ought to start the automobile to get the gasoline flowing. specially circumstances the fumes in the trunk from the CNG have been reliable. i could be afraid to have a speaker or different electronics in the back for concern of sparks. additionally, 2 tanks take extra area than one gasoline tank. Plus, any intense injury demands the gasoline to be became off, only yet another element to tension approximately catching on fire.
