If your puppy is only 1 month old, I am assuming you are also the breeder.

The best way to clip their nails at this young age is with a human fingernail clippers. Their nails are soft, & quite small, it would be difficult & dangerous to attempt doing this with a trimmer designed for the adult dog.

Start with the back paws. Try to lay the puppy in the crook of your arm on it's back (have someone help stroke its head to keep its attention if the puppy squirms) & gently hold the back paws, taking off just the tips of the nails. It will almost be as though you didnt trim anything at all, but it will make a difference. There should be a thinning & slight hooking at the end of the nail, that is all you want to remove.

Once you have finished the back paws, rearrange the puppy so that it has its hind paws on your lap, & the front paws hooked over hand, which is cupping its chest. Then trim the front nails in the same fashion.

If the puppy starts to squirm quite a bit, it is best to stop completely & give it some different attention, let it lick your face, make noises & distract it... then reposition & start all over with the next nail. At this age, you want it to be totally pain-free & unstressful, it will make future trimmings that much easier.

Ideally you should trim the nails once to twice a week, depending on the surfaces they are walking on & how much wear they are getting. Best of luck!

Of course you can.

Make sure you don't cut the quick though. If your not sure how to do it ask your vet to show you. Cutting them to short can make the dog bleed and it HURTS. The same as if you cut your nails to short.

They make nail clippers for dogs with guards on them that allow you to only cut "so much". It basically shaves a little piece of nail off. Also stay away from the guillotine type nail clippers (the kind where you put the nail in a little arch way and the blade comes up from the bottom or down from the top), they tend to smash the nails before cutting them (ouch!)

I"d take him to the Vet for the first tim and you can have the Vet show you how to do but it usually takes 2 people to do it safely and correctly. Puppys(dogs and Cats) have a vein inside the nail and if the puppy's nails are dark just about imposible to see and it is most important that the vein is not cut for very painful for the puppy and it will bleed and you must have septic pencil or liquid to apply and stop the bleeding so take him to the Vet if its bothersome but do not try yourself-the vet also has special clippers for animal nails

Yes you can. If you've never done it before, I recommend bringing him to the vet first, to see how - you don't want to hit the quick and make him bleed. With a puppy that young, you should be able to use a regualr fingernail clipper.

I would not attempt cutting my dog's nail if I have one. Although some of the people here gave details of doing it (a few good ones too) please take your puppy to a vet or grooming center so that they can show you exactly how. Then next time you could do it yourself.

yes you can cut the puppies nails. don't cut past the bend of the toe nail and buy some toenail quik incase you cut back too far and make them bleed. white toenails are the easiest, you can see the quik, pink. black toe nails require more adjusting. never cut past bend of toenail, you'll see white when you clip. good luck.

yeah, you can, but be super careful just to get the very tips of the toenails because you can easily cut the quiks of the toenails and then the puppy will bleed and be scared and nervous every time you or a groomer tries to groom his nails...

Yes. But you need a special nail clippers designed to dogs.

And please be careful. If you clip too deep you'll cut into an vien, which will cause their nails to bleed.
