On the A66 to scotch corner - on parts of the road, there are tallish thin poles, that are black and white and alternate with a grey top and a red top. Does anyone know what these are signs for.
It has puzzled me for years and I have been given various ridiculous explanations - can anyone oblige?

Poles like that at the side of the road in scotland are usually for when there is very deep snow to mark where the road is. Dont know if you get very deep snow in that area but could be what their for.

Yep I have been along that road loads of times. They are Snow Poles, same as we get in Bonny Scotland.

When the snow is reaklly thick, it shows the plough driver where the road is.

Get your kicks on route 66!!!

They are probably Road Edge markers that are tall enough to show above the snow.

Very common in Nordic countries, but even Britain has deep snow sometimes, so it is very proper that they have adopted this helpful measure!

Yes, they are to show the snow ploughs the way when deep in snow, and it gets plenty.

They are snow depth gauges. You know the snow is really deep when they cannot be seen.
