If they think this, then that just goes to show how dumb they are to make such a rash judgment about someone based on little to no knowledge of the person.
Some people are too immature (in either their actual age or their emotional or mental development) to realize that there are many reasons for people to be quiet.
I wouldn't worry about it too much (though I know that might be easier said than done). People of even a moderate amount of quality know that just because a person is shy or quiet doesn't mean they're stuck up.

I am the same way when I am around new people and everyone gets the same impression. It never seems to dawn on anyone that I am shy and not arrogant. After ahile when I relax they are amazed by who I really am. I believe it goes with the saying "do not judge a book by its cover". But I think it takes less thought for people just to say that you are stuck up, thinking you are ahy won't satisfy people's judgemental side.

my sister in law and my daughter were very shy when they where young. their own cousins said the same thing.
it's that they are intimidated by your quietness. They don't know you, because they won't take the time to learn who you are.
if they think this then you can either push yourself to be more outgoing ( helps when you get older) or get used to always being judged because of your silence.
you should try getting involved with some sort of group/club/volunteer in your community/church/school. you will find that little by little you are more comfortable with people that share your same interests.
hope this helps.

Hah, I get that a lot too. People don't take time to asses situations properly because it could be a) that you are stuck up, or b) that you are a quiet person.
Most people won't go the extra mile to think past their automatic judgments.

Because they don't think stuckup people are shy and they'd rather assume the worst case about someone they don't know.

i found that shy people are great thinkers, and value trust at a high degree. be what you are youll know when to say something. and to paticipate. besides youll learn more by listening than talking, like most in our society do. i believe thats called babel.
