i have a 1988 jeep wrangler with the 4.2 inline 6 what gear ratio do i have?

No way of telling unless you crawl in under the thing and read the tag on the rear. If someone removed it then you have to pull the cover and count the teeth on both ring and pinion and divide it too see what ratio you have! 4.2 doesn't mean anything!

There should be a tag attached to either the inspection plate or the bolts holding the chunk in. The gear ratio is usually on the second line on that tag. You may need to remove the tag to read it because sometimes the bolt head will cover up the first number.

It;s probably 3.07. but if you're not sure here's an easy check.

Chock the front wheels and put the jeep in neutral. Jack up one rear wheel. Rotate the wheel while looking at the driveshaft. If it turns about 1 1/2 turns you have 3.07 gears. If it makes over 2 turns you have 4.10. If it's somthing in between it could be 3.54 but these are rare.

If it is a SPORT, you probably have the DANA 44, but if you still have the original sticker, you will be able to read it on there. If it is a Sahara, you will most definitely have the 44.
