What makes you say Cider is cheaper than beer? I drink Cider and I can tell you in the pubs in Devon it is the same price if not dearer. Worthington smooth, local pub £2.20. Strongbow Cider £2.40. Local Golf club, beer and lager £2.35 Strongbow £2.50 Years ago you could buy Scrumpy [rough cider] very cheaply, even direct from the Cider makers in 5 gallon barrels. This was very popular, so the Government jumped onto the band wagon and classed it as beer and imposed the same tax, hence price increase. Remember they did the same with Diesel fuel. When diesel engined vehicles became more popular because of the cheapness of the fuel, they decided to increase the tax in line with petrol. They don"t miss a bloody trick do they.

Excise pure and simple.
You should try the 'Natch' cider , with all the floaters still in it. You may feel perfectly sober in the head after drinking it , but watch out for the catch , you get drunk from the feet up , hee! , hee!. The term 'legless' comes to mind. There used to be a place in the Barbican area of Plymouth which sold it in half pints only , cos the barman knew the effects. The Forresters Pub in Torquay sold it as well , very cheap too , probably from the local yokel and untaxed. These new-age ciders like Magners are **** , get the 'real stuff down you.

For all you Americans answering this question, cider in England is an alcoholic drink made from fermented apples. Cider in the US is (I think!) what we would call apple juice eg: a soft drink.
There are some VERY cheap and nasty brands favoured by the homeless and alcoholics. 3 litres of 6% strength for a couple of quid cheap.
At the other end of the scale there are some very tasty vintage kinds made with specific varieties of apples etc.
Then you have Magners, which isn't very nice but benefitted from a hit marketing campaign and a gimmick (serve with ice) that made it the drink of the year.

I'm glad you asked. Cider comes from apples. Beer comes from beer nuts. Apples are cheaper than beer nuts. Ergo, beer costs more.

Cider is just squashed apples, pasteurized.
Beer has more of a process to it, plus bottling, and more places to deliver etc.

Because cider is made from apples that grow on trees and you have to get beer from Tescos.
