I found some 350 thread count at Linens and Things in their discontinued table for $25 for a set of full size sheets and matching pillow cases and hated giving them up when I got a larger bed. They were 100% cotton and smooth as silk to sleep on and washed like a dream. Anything less than 280 count will wear out quickly and feels like sleeping on burlap. Right now I have 600 count cotton sheets and love them but they wrinkle badly.

For a good night's sleep you most likely would want 100% cotton percale. Percale starts at a 200 thread count.
If you go with a mixture of cotton & whatever - chances are you'll be scratching... (true story, I bought the matching sheets to a nice comforter from Cannon -- they were a blend -- and for my guest room. When my guests slept over - I heard complaints the next day. I had to change their sheets -- and it's years later, and I still am reminded of it...)
Enjoy your comfortable sleep.

i always go by something my grandfather told me years ago. a poor man cannot afford to use cheap tools. how true. if i wanted to sweep out the garage, they have cheap brooms at the dollar store. but for something as personal and intimate, and long lasting as bed linen i have to go with the best i can afford.
percale is basic american sheeting and ranges around 180-200 thread count. percale is okay if you're not looking for comfort. otherwise look for no less than 330 thread count, preferably around 500 (they do make 1020). best is egyptian or pima cotton, these are called long staple cotton and are not prone to that annoying condition known as pilling. and note: if you buy blended.... well, don't buy blended.

You want egyptian cotton with a thread count of at least 300.
Go to overstock, com, I got 400 count queen size for $40 a set.
Sometimes QVC has good prices on them too.

Go to Ross or TJ Maxx or Marshalls or whatever you have, and pick some out there. Dirt cheap and super soft! Just be prepared to search for them, they'll be under a pile. Bed Bath & Beyond and Linens n Things claim to be discount houses but they are only slightly cheaper than a department store.

It's not always about the thread count. There is an article on this site that talks about choosing bedding.

You said you are not super wealthy- so what I suggest wealth is for a better living, when you sleep comfortably that is much important than your wealth- you know peoples used to say Health is wealth.Minimum start from 200 counts-so look what you can afford it.

aim for 400 thread count, u can pick them up at big lots if u look often for like $20 (that's cheap for sheets of any kind). if u get less than that they will have little balls of wadded up fabric on them and it's uncomfortable. martha stewart sheets are nice if u can get them on sale at like target or wal-mart

definite, you're a nasty individual. Say "thank you", placed the sheets on your mattress, and sleep on them. have confidence me, as quickly as your eyes are closed and you're noisily snoring & drooling throughout your pillow you will no longer supply a damn in regards to the colour, the blend, or the thread count selection.

Find an Outlet Mall, most of them have Springmaid-Wamsutta stores. Also check out Kohl's. Their sales are excellent, but dont' buy anything there when it's not on sale.
