I have a friend that is highly allergic to dogs, and yet she can come to my home and spend time with my dogs and has no reaction....she pets them and plays with them and they love to sniff her (cause they like to sniff everything!). They are a lot bigger than all the other breeds listed in your answer....I suggest you look into adopting a retire racer...a Greyhound. They are known as the "hypo-allergenic" dog. They have very fine, short hair, and since they are new to home living you can train them to stay off of beds and furniture from the start. They are quiet, placid, well-behaved dogs. They don't need to run although they do need to be taken for a walk daily as every dog does. It is better to get one from a rescue group that fosters so that they are healthy, small animal tested, and introduced to home living and kids before you adopt. Good luck...

Here is the thing, no dog is fully anti-allergenic. If your child is only mildly allergic, you can get any kind of dog and then the child will build a resistance to your dog. Pet allergies don't usually have to do with just the hair, it also has to do with oils and natural secretions that the dog puts out. So if you were to get a dog, short or long haired, your child could build a resistance to the issue.

This depends upon what your child is allergic to. is it the hair the dander, or may even be one of the common products use on dogs.

May breeds are marketed as being allergy freindly, Poodles, poodle mixes, Beachon Frise, are a few of the most common.

though many short haired breeds also have less cause of allergies. Do some research both through your childs doctors and the veterinarian before you decide to get a dog.

Talk to your pediatrician to find out how sever your kid's allergy is. I'm allergic to dogs as well, but we own 2- both indoor dogs, both huge shedders. I'm usually fine, unless the pollen count's high or I don't take my allergy medication.

Once you know how mild Junior's allergy is, talk to a veterinarian- he will know what breeds will be less likely to cause a reaction. Some breeds have fur and shed, making allergies worse (Labradors, Dalmatians, most shepherds...). Some breeds have hair, don't shed, but need clipping (Shi Tsu, any Poodle...).

Some other things a vet can tell you- what breeds are generally easier to train, what breeds are better with kids, etc.

It is not a breed allergy. I am allergic to dogs too. I went to all my friend's houses and they all have different breeds of dogs. I always start sneezing the minute i get into the house.

Yorkies, Miniature Schnauzers, Maltese, Havanese, Poodles, Bichon Frise, Shih Tzus, Chinese Crested Powderpuff. Bring your child around that type of dog first just to make sure he wont have a reaction tho, it's never 100%

Get a Poodle. They have hair like peoples hair, it does not even shed at all.
I have allergies and asthma, and I've had mine seven years. No problems, plus they're one of the smartest dogs there is.

If your child is just mildly allergic to dogs, then if he were around short haired non-shedding dogs it would be best.

Poodles, airdales, Westies, and some mix breeds are known to be anti-allergenic. Check out your library or a good website for more information. Also try talking to a vetrinarian, they'd beable to give you more breeds that would hopefully not agitate your childs allergies.
Hope this helps, good luck,

Shih-tzus have very low amounts of dander and they don't shed. They do require a lot of maintenance though.
Poodles are another alternative because they have low dander and don't shed.
If you want a small dog, go with those. If you want a large. try a standard poodle.
