i know exactly how you feel. it really pisses me off because first of all, they have no idea what it's like, and they can't get inside your head. it's fucked up, but i don't think they realize how annoying it is...i think it's very rude and just plain ignorant, especially since they know it is severe, and you can't just 'snap' yourself out of it, otherwise you wouldn't be depressed in the first place !

It is hard to cheer up when you are severally depressed! I am trying to get over the shingles-I suffer from depression-but I have never felt this bad. Shingles affects your whole nervous system. I hope that you never get them because you have to suffer pain and also a depression that takes you all the way to the bottom! When someone tells you to cheer up most of the time no harm is intended. When you feel like you have hit the bottom and the lest little thing can cause the tears to start flowing then it can be easy to take offense. Take care of yourself!

Yes - one night my husband packed and left me and I was up all night crying. I spent the whole night veering between deciding to kill myself and deciding to carry on because (don't laugh!) I was afraid no-one would look after my cats. The next morning, I had to go out and you can imagine how I looked, exhausted after a night's sobbing. Well some total stranger, as he passed me, commented "Cheer up, darlin! It might never 'appen!" I just looked at him and said nothing. I think he realised how I was feeling and although he deserved a mouthful of abuse, I've always been glad I didn't, because his little girl was with him. I do wish I'd had anything left in me though to just tell him quietly "My husband left me last night: I've been up all night crying and trying to decide whether to go on living or not." Looking back, I can see now that the said husband wasn't worth losing a second's sleep over, but you can't see that at the time and strangers making stupid remarks don't help at all.

Unfortunately everyone deals with being down/depression. Some people deal with it differently. If its someone you know telling you to cheer up it may just be there way of trying to do something good for you but not knowing exactly how to do it.
My GF doesn't like me dropping my problems on her because she has her own problems.
I suggest exercising to blow off steam and maybee seeing a psycologist

agh, i hate that. Especially when it comes from a friend. When i was really depressed i went through a goth stage. I had a friend who was a prep and a male cheerleader, he would always tell me to cheer up and would get embarrassed around me. I could see if you were trying to help them to be happy and playfully tell them to cheer up, but he would say it in a rude way. It made me feel really bad, because every time i was around him i was reminded of how messed up i was. In my opinion, you cant tell someone to cheer up if you haven't been through the things they have.

The reason why it's so irritating when someone tells you to cheer up is because they are saying this purely out of their own needs - they want you to feel better because it makes them feel uncomfortable that you are upset, or they say it as a silencer...to get you to be quiet. Saying "cheer up" therefore puts your needs ahead of someone elses...it's a way to make you feel more comfortable, by getting rid of the insecurity you feel in the presence of someone else's pain.

Enormously. When I am down the last thing I need is a happy face coming along full of good intentions - it makes me furious and very bad tempered. I feel much better when someone commiserates with me and we can have a good old moan together!

Cheer up it might never happen, makes me want to scream, this is the face I have when concentrating of just drifting in and out of day dreams, there is nothing wrong.
I just have this look. actually if we all had a grin stuck on our face all day we would look demented and not quite the ticket.

Ever hear "Cheer up, love, it might never happen!" next time you hear that, say "It already has, thanks, you muppet!". On the bright side, strangers don;t know what you are going through - see your doctor, there is light at the end of the tunnel. Good luck.
