we have been working on potty training for about a year, my 3 year old son has only in the past 5 months gotten the grasp of it. he goes poo in the potty just fine. but sometimes he'll be doing something and pee in his underwear some, then he'll run off to the potty in a hurry. he seems like he's holding it until he just can't anymore so that he can continue to play, is there a way to help him with this? i've tried talking with him, and it doesn't seem to work. and he still wears diapers to bed becasue he wakes up with his diaper soaked. he stays dry though naps no matter how long they are. and he refuses to wake me up even when he first gets up in the morning. but at night, after putting him to bed, he'll say i gotta go potty after having already just pottied, i can't say no, but all he does is go in the bathroom and play. any advise for anything?

I know he has good bladder control. he has told me when we first get in the car that he has to pee really bad, and if i can't get him to a bathroom, he holds it. he has kept himself from peeing for a 20 min car ride until i found a bathroom he could use. and i swear he went for like 5 mins when he went in. and sometimes he'll act like he has to go so i'll ask him and he'll say no, and then a short time after that he has a small accident. i hate forcing him to use the potty, but sometimes that's the only way.

durring the day - watch him... a lot of the time they are giving indicators that they need to pee - touching or grabbing often. then just ask "do you need to go potty honey?" usually if you ask, they will stop and go. as for at night, just keep doing the diaper - pullups would be better. make sure that his path to the bathroom is lit well enough and let him know he can get up to pee at night. he'll get it when he's ready.

Every hour or two stop his play and have him go in and try to use the potty.... Get some colorfull tissue paper and cut out some fun shapes.. sprinkle a few in the toilet and tell him to sink them... He will think of peeing as fun and a game....

Limit fluids in the 2 hours prior to bedtime... Just before bed have him go pee then give him a warm bath it will induce further peeing.... About 2-3 hours after he goes to bed go in and wake him slightly guide him into the bathroom andd have him go pee... By turning on the sink faucet to a slow trickle the sound can induce the need to pee...

At three years old your sons system is still slightly immature and he may not feel the need to pee until he has only minutes to actually get to the bathroom...

If you gently wake him during the night you can induce in him a schedule of getting up to pee in the night and avoid the night time accidents until his body matures and he feels the need to pee and wakes to do it himslf during the night...

Install a nightlight in the bathroom so he can go in and pee without turning on the overhead light which is bright and may wake him more than needed to pee... Get a stool he can stand on so he can pee in the morning without your assistance...

At 3 years old a child should be urinating 5-7 times every 24 hours.... Keep a chart of when he actually pees so if you have him try and he doesnt you know the nexttime he eeds to so he doesnt have an accident...

With my daughter I took her every hour and had her sit on the potty while i was in there. Sometimes she went and other times she just sat there, however through this tool she learned that it's ok to leave in the middle of something fun to go potty becuase when you return the fun is still there. Just be consistant regardless whats going on.

My only advice for the daytime is to take him/encourage him to go to the bathroom whenever you think it might be time for him to go again. We've got my son down to about one nighttime accident per week by encouraging him to stay dry at night. He only gets a few sips of water and uses the toilet right before bed. We always tell him things like, "have a dry night", "wake up dry in the morning" or "think dry thoughts". He also gets a reward for the mornings he wakes up dry.

I have a great ebook that I found online about knowing the signs of readiness, and how to train in 3 days or less. Its a really great book, and an easy method that anyone can do. It may be just what you need. I would be happy to forward it to you. You can email me at starsalso@yahoo.com to request it. Take care! :)

It might help to make a game out of it. A good tip for boys (though it may sound funny) is to put a cheerio in the toilet and tell him to aim for the cheerio. That way it's like a game to hit the cheerio.

Just give it time. This is normal. Just keep washing the undies & changing him for now. He'll grow out of it. Boys are so deeply involved in playtime they just don't realize they have to go until it is too late. He'll learn.
