The Army has some great oppertunities. If you want to just get some training and job experience, join for a 3 year run and then get out.
Your options are enourmous. message me if you want extensive info on what you can do. I'll be more than happy to tell you the benifits.
Edit -
Read through this and notice the Anti-Military / Anti-American people that don't appriciate a singe thing Soldiers do for them. I am pointing this out because you will run into these cowards often. Sometimes this is a thankless profession. I ignore them and smile when they insult me because they don't know what we really do to keep them safe and their liberties free...

Best thing I ever did. Don't join if you are addicted to marijuana or like to drink and drive. If you fit either of these, then you're already a turd and we don't want you, and we will make your discharge painful and humiliating.
As I get ready to go to my 15 year high school reunion, I am one of the most successful in my class. And all I did was join the Army.
The Army will enable you to "be all you can be." So...if you want to become a shamming, unmotivated turd, well the Army will give you first class instruction on that too. However... if you don't sweat the BS, and work hard, and apply yourself (strike when the iron is hot) you will go farther than you have ever imagined.
BTW all the services offer the same potential for personal fulfillment, just different lifestyles IMHO

I think it is a great idea, but an idea that should be considered for a little while. If you are willing to work hard, you can get a job in the Army. They will even pay for you to go to college. You don't have to get the best grades, and they will pay for your college. If you don't want to fight, you can be an office person in the Army, which I assume you don't want to be. Try your best at school for now and consider the pros and cons. Many of the people in my family are in the military, and they all love it. My uncle is a Colonel in the Army National Guard in my state and wants to become General. He loves it. An I have a cousin who is in the Army Rangers and he toured Iraq last year. He saw a lot of action and he loves it. Just really think about it before you join, though.

Depends a lot on what your plans are for your life. I have a friend that went to the military because it's one of the best places to get training as a firefighter, which is what he had always wanted to do. You have time yet before you make your decision, but I would look into the sort of training and careers you can get into by joining up. There are also other options to consider if your grades aren't the best. Community colleges aren't a bad option either.

I just joined adn took my oath 2 days ago. My advice would be finish school. I got my GED about a month ago. All I can say is, if your smart enough to get at least a 50 on the ASVAB, go for it. For me it was a piece of cake, but a guy at MEPS failed to get a 31 with a High School Diploma. You got a few years still, because they wont let you in now, but its something i dont regret.... yet.
It just all depends on what you want to do in the army. They pay for college, they give you skills that you cant get anywhere else, and its a gret experience. GoArmy.com has all the info you need on the different MOS that you can choose from. I ship out to Ft. Benning on NOV1. One thing about it is, if your not ready don't do it. They move quick. In the last month, I've got my GED, been to MEPS and have my ship date. I suggest waiting on school to get finished.

If you join the army or the marines there is a very good chance that you will be sent to Iraq (especially if you wind up in the Infantry). The chance is obviously less if you join the navy, air force or coast guard.
Aside from that very significant risk it is a noble (though very difficult) profession.

That is a personal decision, for me it worked. If you are not good in school, it is a good way to get actual hands on training in certain fields, and set yourself up for a career after the Army, if you so choose, Of course you could always stay in for 20 years, and retire before your 40. I myself hae done 6 years active, and am working on staying in the Reserve.

Think about what is happening right now. There are soldiers in Iraq that don't believe we have a right to be there. But there they are doing their duty because they volunteered to serve thier country. Think very carefuly about this because once you sign up, you no longer have the option of protesting the war. If you can live with carrying out a duty inspite of your personal beliefs, then go for it. It is the best experience you will ever have.

That is a very personal thing. I joined the Army and never regretted it. Got me the GI Bill, which got me a degree, helped me develop a sense of responsibility, and most importantly taught me that attitude is everything in work and life. In the military sometimes you get the shaft and sometimes you get the gold mine. It is all up to you to make the best of your career.
