An eating disorder is when you have problems or disturbances with eating. The most common ones are Anorexia and Bulimia Nervosa, and COE (Compulsive Over Eating). Someone who has Anorexia will reduce or stop eating entirely, only sometimes eating things that are "safe" such as a carrot or salad. Someone with Bulemia will eat excessive amounts of food and throw them up. This process is called binging and purging. A person with COE will also binge, but without throwing up the food.

Eating disorders are complex, chronic illnesses largely misunderstood and misdiagnosed. The most common eating disorders - anorexia nervosa, bulimia nervosa, and binge eating disorder - are on the rise in the United States and worldwide. No one knows exactly what causes eating disorders. However, all socioeconomic, ethnic and cultural groups are at risk.

More than ninety percent of those with eating disorders are women. Further, the number of American women affected by these illnesses has doubled to at least five million in the past three decades.

Eating disorders are one of the key health issues facing young women. Studies in the last decade show that eating disorders and disordered eating behaviors are related to other health risk behaviors, including tobacco use, alcohol use, marijuana use, delinquency, unprotected sexual activity, and suicide attempts. Currently, 1-4% of all young women in the United States are affected by eating disorders.1 Anorexia nervosa, for example, ranks as the third most common chronic illness among adolescent females in the United States.2

Eating disorders have numerous physical, psychological and social ramifications, from significant weight preoccupation, inappropriate eating behavior, and body image distortion. Many people with eating disorders experience depression, anxiety, substance abuse, and childhood sexual abuse, and may be at risk for osteoporosis and heart problems. Moreover, death rates are among the highest for any mental illness.

There are two basic types: Anorexia and Bullimic

If you are anorexic, you fear food because you think it will make you fat. You often think you are fat, when others see you skinny. You starve your self to loose weight.

If you are Bullimic, you think the same as if you were Anorexic, but instead of not eating you throw up your food.

Both are very dangerous and emotionally painful to have. They often occur because of a low self esteem. People should never be mean to someone who is Anorexic/Bullimic because they don't know how much pain they go through. ( More than being overweight)

Just that eating that isn't normal, starving yourself or binging and purging trying to obtain extreme weight loss however the other end of the spectrum are those who just eat to eat and can't control their weight and have to obtain weight loss through surgery such as gastric bypass etc.

There are many. For instance Anorexia, means you think you are fat, so you starve yourself and excessive excercise. But also, another eating disorder can be eating too much, and never excercising.

There are many variations.
