by pulling at the leaves....the easier the leaves pull out the riper it is......or you can also check the use-by date on the bottom of can if using pineapple chunks/slices

Smell the base of it (I know this sounds crazy, but it really works). If it smells of pineapple, it's ripe. If it doesn't have a scent then it's not ripe.

If you can pull out one of the leaves easily, it's ripe.
