The disease we call the common cold is really a group of minor illnesses that can be caused by any one of almost 200 different viruses. Usually a common, or head, cold is confined to the nose and throat, but the same viruses can also infect the larynx and the lungs. These viral infections sometimes are followed by more serious bacterial infections of the throat, lungs, or ears.
Anyone with a cold should stay home in isolation if possible. This measure is mainly for the sake of other people, but it also gives you the chance to rest and recuperate. Consult your physician if the cold lasts more than ten days, if there are symptoms that suggest that the infection has spread beyond the nose and throat, or if you often get bronchitis or ear infections. Some symptoms should send you to your physician immediately.
There is no way to treat a common cold. There is only some advise that is worth following. Stay home, in a warm (but not overheated) room, and increase the moisture in the air with some type of vaporizer or humidifier. Drink plenty of fluids, and take an apsprin or two at night to relieve any aches and pains and help you to sleep. Over-the counter cold tablets, cough syrups, and nasal sprays may also give you temporary relief, but you should use them only in moderation, and not expect them to cure your cold.

Go the the drug store and ask for a good over the counter medicine or me I-- brew myself my own little concoction of herbs in a tea. Drink it hot several times a day until I am well. Whatever you do drink plenty of liquids and get lots of rest so your body can heal itself! Vitamin C and Zinc can be a big help also! I like a heating pad-Vick's rub and a vaporizer handy as well! Keeping good and warm helps! Keeping plenty of orange juice on hand is a good idea as well. Some good soup is also a plus. This a good time to curl up and read a good book!

Take cold-eeze or Zicam. It gives you a shot of zinc which shortens the length of your cold. Avoid orange juice (the acid is bad for the nasal drip) but do take plenty of vitamin C. Drink water, 7-up and eat chicken noodle soup & crackers. If you get real sick and have to stay in bed, I'd drink some Gatorade to keep you from dehydrating. (P.S. - there's been a medical study done that shows echinecea does not work - so don't waste your money on that)

eat some really hot curry or chilli spicy stuff and wrap up warm so you can sweat it out. drink plenty of fluids and fgruit and veg high in vit c.
if you dont have time to do this, just think very positive and determined that you will not succumb to the cold. this has worked for me but it does not beat the cold but just delays it to hit you later.

Make a hot lemon drink, and a hot water bottle at the same time. take 2 paracetomol, and go cuddle up in bed. You will feel a lot better in the morning.

you cant do anything. the cold is a virus that constantly mutates and so no medication can effectively battle it, however your immune system will beat it, given time.
you can only make yourself more comfortable (ie use vicks to help you breath etc) but there is nothing you can do to make the cold go away any faster, you just have to wait.

Drink lots of water and juice. This keeps your mucous thin and watery instead of thick, chunky, and green, leaving a good breeding ground for bacteria which can lead to further complications such as pneumonia. Use saline nasal spray to flush your sinuses so bacteria cannot collect in them.
