I have a basset hound and we are breeding her with another basset hound. She went into heat about 2 weeks ago and her and the other basset hound got tied together. Two days after they got tied together, she was out of heat. I mean she had no more symptoms at all. My other dogs (male and neutered) were not sniffing at her anymore. The blood stopped. Just all the signs of her being in heat, totally went away. I took her back over to the other basset hound two days after they mated, so that we could try one more time to mate them, just to be sure it took and she would not accept him. So I'm wondering if she did became pregnant from the one time they did successfully mate, does that mean her heat cycle would end just that fast?
Thanks

Thanks for all the answers. I know she will have a healthy pregnancy and have beautiful puppies. I can't wait!
I have to say to the two people that think I have no right be be breeding my dog. First of all, don't assume you know what I've done and haven't done. I've talked to my vet about it. I've read tons of stuff online and in books about breeding, whelping and basset hounds in general. No, I didn't have all the "Testing" done. But she is healthy and I wanted a litter from her. She will be fixed after this. Don't tell me I have no business breeding her. It is none of your business what I do with my dog. Get off your high horse. I was asking a simple question. I don't care for your "lectures". Take them elsewhere, I've heard it all before and I'll do as I please.
My husband, my kids and myself would like to experience the miracle of birth. These puppies are wanted dearly and we will do all we can to make sure they go into wonderful homes. If you have a problem with it, sue me!

yes it can happen, and when she does not want the male anymore usually that is a sign that she does not want no more. i breed golden retrievers and my female does this all the time after her tie with the male usually after the second tie. wait til she is about 35 days then you will be ablt to tell if she is prego because her rib area will get larger and her nipples will look bigger also. she will eat alot or she will not eat much right now. if she eats alot now she will slow down before she has the pups and if she doesn't eat much now she will before she has the pups because that will be the time she needs to gain her strength for her birthing. mine eats alot before she delivers and not much at the begining that is normal. right now you need to start to feed her puppy food and give her(wht rice, carrots, cottage cheese, chicken liver, turkey). these things are what i feed mine when she is prego. the best puppy food is called chicken soup because it has the best ingredients and it is all natural, this is what i feed mine and all my dogs are on this food. good luck with puppies you will have fun and it will be alot of time spent with her and the pups. the heat cycle doesn't end it just slows way down and it will end completly when the pups are about 2weeks old. you won't see it but her privates will still look swollen but nothing is there. so don't worry about her.

First of all, have her spayed because she is a mutt and we already have too many illbred dogs in shelters. And don't you dare tell me that she is a "designer dog breed." It is possible that it could be a false pregnancy. Are her nipples at all swollen like she has milk? Is she itching a lot like she has hot spots? It is possible that you didn't take enough care watching while she was outside, causing an unexpected tie and pregnancy. Also, sometimes dogs hormones, just like people, continue to be a little wacky for a good chunk of time both before and after the cycle for up to a month, so it might be nothing. You could bring her to the vet to be sure, which you should do if this continues.

No the heat cycle really doesn't end, but within hours of becoming pregnant her hormones will change, experienced stud dogs will sense that change in smell and loose interest. When the female becomes non receptive she has stopped ovulating

dogs are usually in heat for about two weeks and so she would have been coming out of heat anyway. usually the best way to tell if your dogs is pregnant is raised nipples and a swollen mini so be on the look out for these signs. lastly the last few days when the bleeding has stopped but she is still responsive to the male are the best few days to mate so you should be quite lucky good luck

Dogs don't bleed the entire time they are in heat, nor will they accept a male during that entire time either.
I hope before you bred her you did health testing (not just simple vet exams), temperament testing, pedigree research and either had her shown and pointed or evaluated for breed standard before you had her bred. I also hope you made sure that she and the male you bred her too have something to add to the breed besides just puppies.
I think before you decided to breed you should have studied up on heat cycles, breeding, whelping, newnborn care, etc.

when your bi*ch first comes in heat she is ready to breed about day 12. i breed day 9-11-13-15. after that in 63 to 65 days the pups come.then in about 6months she come into heat again.you should skip her first heat and at least every other heat.

I'll be honest with you. you have NO BUSINESS breeding your bassett. You have no idea how heat cycles or whelping works. Only a fully informed person who has been educated about all aspects of responsible, good breeding should allow their dogs to mate. Both dogs need full reproductive and health diagnostics done by a general vet or even better a veterinary reproductive specialist. In case your dog has become pregnant, you need to start talking to vets NOW and reading all you can about whelping Bassets NOW. Don't let her give birth while your still ignorant about everything that's going on.
And afterwards spay her. There are enough GOOD breeders out there who actually know what they are doing.
