why not like... chinese french japanese etc.

some people might have misunderstood my question, what i really meant is why is english almost like a "dominant" language. for example, when you go to international airports, the signs always have the native language, and then english.

Actually Chinese is most used as a first language, what with the Chinese population and all. But I think including people's second languages and stuff that yes, English is most used.

This is probably because it is such an easy language to learn.

Wrong, Mandarin (Putungha) is the language spoken by the most people in the world, and this century is the century of China. So if you want to join the bandwagon, learn Mandarin while you are still young.

I think it has something to do with trading goods. It helps to know the language of whom you are trading with. At one time, spanish was more prevalent - The spaniards were trading goods between colonies throughout the Caribbean. Later, the Spanish military and navy declined as the Caribbean colonies gained more and more independence, and events in the Caribbean were taken more seriously by all European governments. Soon after, the English became trading powers and hence, the spread of that language.

it used in many more countries than mandarin chinese, but chinese has more speakers..I think many Europeans need to learn it because it is spoken in Britain and America, which are huge economical powerhouses
