I love wolves!!! I always have! How could a dog-lover not like them in their pure form?! To me the predator thing is ridiculous as I live in the country and have seen the loose neighborhood dogs eat a deer they took down! A dog is a dog!

If you're an animal lover, you would love and appreciate the wolf for what he is. One can be trained for home and the other cannot. I guess the wolf may be despised by some because he relies on prey to survive. Also, the domesticated animal can be touched and held, which is what some people need/want.

Firstly the dog is domesticated, the wolf is a wild animal. Domestic pets have been bred for umpteen generations so certain things no longer occur or occur infrequently such as obedience or violence. A wild animal is unpredictable in that it respons to its circumstances and defend themselves. So as pets they would not be considered safe because an owner would not be able to keep it safe or themselves safe from it.

Also wolves have a history or damaging livestock or being a danger to lone travellers. They are predators, an integral part of the food chain in their area and often the top carnivore in their habitat. Hence where they live they compete with humans, both species beleive they are number 1. It's actually taken them to cease to be a threat that humans have understood that animals are just behaving in ways natural to them and resentment of that behaviour is unjustified.

The wolf is a predator- they kill the weak, old, sick, young for food. We often despise this behavior because to us, the wolf is preying on those who can't protect themselves.

Dogs are loved- they are obedient, we can teach them, touch them, and they return our love.

I guess it's all in the eye of the beholder.

There are things to be admired in the wolf society- they don't abuse their young- they'd kill a "puppy-molester." They have a clearly defined social order/heirarchy- they know who's in charge. The alpha male and alpha female are manogamous. Every adult member of the pack is responsable for caring for puppies. Teamwork is required if anyone is to eat.

On the other hand, as a dog owner, I like knowing that I won't be attacked by my dogs if I show weakness.

I'm not sure that I would say that wolves are "despised." I don't think they'd make heart-warming movies about them if that were true. From experience, though, wolves are much more aloof than dogs and not willing to come when called, play ball, sleep in your bed or allow themselves to be dressed up like dogs will, among other things.

With that said, I admire wolves more than I can express in this post and am forver grateful that I've been allowed to experience this magestic creature up close and personal.

Who said it was despised?
Maybe it's also to do with the fact that the wolf roams free and would/could be a threat to man.
I think it would be great if there were wild wolves in the UK but would also be quite scared when walking my dogs and kids!

Wolves are the ones who wouldn't make friends. I love them but I'm sure that in the early days of domestic dogs, it was very confusing and frustrating why one animal would accept humans and another would always stay wild.

I love wolves. They are independant and beautiful, and have a great infrastucture. Domestic dogs are needy, can't do anything for themselves. I suppose they have been bred that way, but I love watching a pack for hours.
