As long as you can hear them and the room is not the bathroom, but a kid safe room - as soon as they are born. Kids should learn how to be on their own and that mommy hasn't gone away. She is just in the other room cooking dinner while the baby plays. Of course, the room needs to be child proof.

I think that yes, you can leave a child alone in a room, but lots of things can depend on when. How old is the child, what room is it and is there anything that they can get hurt with. My 2yr old plays by herself all the time but all of the rooms are pretty much safe. and i can always hear her. and you know what they say, when they are quite is when you have to be worried. :))

basically just use common sense. my son loves playing by himself in his room. you have to be able to leave their sight or they will become very dependant on having you there, which will in time come back to bite you in the butt. just let the child wonder and play while staying near and checking on them to be sure they are ok. but try to stay out of sight.. this will help build some independance that the child needs (and also help their imagination, they can play alone and pretend with their toys, and still have fun). and if for an infant, it will help you be able to do other things while the child is in a play pen or on a blanket in the floor without them screaming when they can't see you anymore.

with all dangerous stuff locked away, I can leave my almost 3 year old son alone in the living room or his room for a few minutes. Sometimes he'll play by himself in his room for like an hour. I can hear him playing, so I know everything is okay.

It depends what room and what dangers are in the room, ie you wouldn't leave a young child in a bathroom with a full bath, or a kitchen with saucepans on the hob. Its mainly common sense.

3 months until mobile. Then one year (depending on how safe the room is, how escapable it is, how long you're gone, and how mischievious the child is.

DEPENDS ON HOW CHILD PROOFED THE ROOM IS MY 2 YEAR OLD PLAYS IN HIS ROOM ALL THE TIME, BUT THERE IS ABSOLUTELY NOTHING IN THERE TO HARM HIM, WALL COVERS FOR THE OUTLETS, NO DRESSER OR CHANGING TABLE TO CLIMB ON NO SMALL PIECES OF ANY KIND....ETC.
