I have to throw a question back to you on this one I'm afraid. How exactly did China or its people benefit from 50-years of isolation? I fail to see a positive, except for strengthening the grip of a totalitarian regime.

It'd be a good idea in theoury. Only problem is we are part of the EU and to be in the EU we have to allow anyone else in the EU into the country to do almost as they please.
Not sure if pulling out of the EU would really do us any favours as there are no trade restrictions between EU countries, if we were to pull out we wouldn't be able to bring back cigs and booze from France freely and all sorts of other goods could potentially cost more due to embargoes EU countries may put on us.
Maybe if we just excluded non-EU residents that would be a start. Or if we had a stricted policy on imigration like the Australians. ie. You have to have a skill that's in short supply and you should certainly be able to speak English fluently. Also rules on religion and what constitutes as discrimination should also be enforced and made clear.

Judging by the amount of racial hatred I see in here being posted by English people perhaps they should. But I would be sorry for all the foreign-born citizens who presumably would then end their lives in ghettoes.
Historically this option did not work so well for Japan when they tried it a few hundred years ago.
If I were going to be so hostile to another race, religion or ethnic group I would be careful to have my own house in order first. Are you confident that English people are so perfectly Christian that segregation will keep them in a purer state? If so, what price the Good Samaritan? Are you confident that without international trade you can grow enough food in your rotten climate for your huge population?

I don't know. Maybe. I hear lots of people say that it's getting too crowded up there.
But then I also hear complaints about the shortage of some workers like nurses and doctors and how hard it is to see a doctor unless it's an emergency. If you closed your borders, does that mean you are also going to stop hiring foreign born nurses, doctors & other skilled workers?
maybe a modified restriction. which should also be done here in the US.
Also, what if you wanted to move to the South of France or Spain?

Why? As someone who is due to revisit China later this year, and as it's hosting the Olympics in 2 years time, I think you'll find China hasn't closed its borders for the next 50 years.

If the Government had applied some logic to immigration in the first place this would not be such a big issue now. People just want a better life, they don't consider the thousand of others doing the same. It is not fair to blame the immigrants; the Government is squarely to blame.

I don`t think closing the borders is the real answer.
What is needed is a tighter control on immigration illegal and legal.

No. Whilst realising that being part of the "club" (Europe) does not allow us to close our borders,I do think we NEED to close them on a temporary basis, whilst this incompetent Government try to sort out the Immigration system.Immigration DOES need to be controlled. That's not being racist,it called common sense!!!!!!
