If they have started a business, or worked a steady job,
stayed out of crime (except for illegal entry), raised a family, etc., for a certain number of years.
How long should this period be?

I think we need confidence the problem will be stopped going forward first. Otherwise more will come. Did you know that according to some Hispanic advocacy groups, 1/3 of the illegals here now are family members of those we gave amnesty to in 1986?

Their point is that we should have legalized family members as well, but that is not what I take from it. We can't afford 4 people more for every 'solid' person illegally here now.

How do you suggest solving the problem going forward?

If we had that, I'd be OK with 'extreme screening'. Which is to say NO twice illegal and no gangs, and must have held down a job (if an adult) or have been supported by adults who did. There was talk in the Senate just before session break of coming up with a law that would let people stay if they were screened and paid taxes (trackable).

I'd rather go with that kind of enforcable screening than with a time limit. When so many illegals have been using fake ID, how can we trust their documents?

However, in any event, I don't see any amnesty until people think laws will be enforced going forward, and I see no serious movement on the enforcement/dismantling of benefits front.

There should be no period that counts for illegal immigrants. Besides, simply staying crime-free does not qualify one as a civic benefactor in this country.

Many such 'solid citizen' types have imported wives from their home countries (additional illegals) aided and abetted other illegal immigrants including criminals, driven without a license, and refused to learn the language and civil laws of this country while sending the bulk of their income to another country. They have conspired with employers to lower wages and worsen work conditions, used social services, education and medical care without repayment, and generally improved themselves at the involuntary expense of US citizens.

In California in particular, the schools are rated at 48th among the states in the nation, largely due to the negative impact of illegal immigrants and their children (even when those children are born here).

Successfully pirating from our resources is not a reason to grant legal status, imo. All illegal immigrants should go back to their country of origin and then apply for legal immigration status if they choose to do so.

luckily no. If the guy entered illegally, he can not regulate status interior the U. S.. He ought to return to his nearby us of a to coach for an immigrant visa, and he will ought to attend ten years to try this because of fact of a 10-300 and sixty 5 days bar on re-get entry to. If his ex have been given a courtroom order for toddler help, then the deadbeat dad whose young ones have in all probability been residing off public information won't in any respect get papers, no longer even through immigration reform amnesty. If the youngsters weren't born interior the U. S., then they might't even get nutrition stamps or different help. Why in the worldwide could your pal want to have a kin with a guy who ran out on his first set of infants? Does she think of he loves her lots he would not do the comparable to her? Love comes and is going, yet character lasts. This guy has no honor, and romantic love with a clean important different won't substitute that.

Eventually, in a couple years, after the majority of illegal immigration has been stopped, then it'll be time to talk about amnesty or whatever. In a binary sense, you could answer that question 'no', but we're famous for extenuating circumstances...
Before we talk about amnesty, though, lady liberty needs to be wearing a 2,000 mile 'chastity belt' so she doesn't turn up 'preggers' again...whatever does happen amnesty-wise needs to take into account that there are now 6.6 billion people in the world, and Mexico's far from being alone in wanting to move right in, nor are they sufficiently vigilant in policing their own borders, read about 'OTM's...people not from Mexico using Mexico as a conduit to come to america illegally...they really need to put in that fence...

The problem here is got to be the term "ILLEGAL" status. If a murder escapes from jail, assumes another idenity, lives the life of Riley for many years and raises a family, should he get amnesty or a pardon? I don't think so.

Yes, I dont know how many of them are to get here legally? So many of the immigrants are doing the work that most americans refuse. Lets face it Americans are lazy, if you Americans sit down and let the work get away from you because you feel you are "entitled" to better conditions then why not let someone do it that will?

By all means let them become legal, I would say if they have stayed crime free for 5 years.

This attitude--rewarding those who cheated immigration law-- is a slap in the face to those immigrants who went through the long process of legally becoming an American. There should be NO reward for illegal invasion. Deportation is the answer.Go back and apply legally.

not automatic permanent residency. maybe a provisional legal status so they can work legally if they can prove that they stayed out of trouble. about 3 or 5 years and then they should go back to the end of the line if they want to apply for citizenship.

illegal workers from asia, south america and eastern europe should be given full citizenships as they are of very hard working nature.
they contribut more to any economy because their employers exploit them by paying pittence and therefore the boss is better off and opens another business to employ more illegal workers
