I believe that we do not have souls, we are souls.
What does the Bible teach us about what the soul really is?
Here are some Scriptures to examine:
Genesis 2:7: "And the LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils the breath of life; and man became a living soul."
Leviticus 5:4: "Or if a soul swear, pronouncing with his lips to do evil, or to do good, whatsoever it be that a man shall pronounce with an oath, and it be hid from him; when he knoweth of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these."
Leviticus 7:20: "But the soul that eateth of the flesh of the sacrifice of peace offerings, that pertain unto the LORD, having his uncleanness upon him, even that soul shall be cut off from his people."
Ezekiel 18:20: "The soul that sinneth, it shall die."
Revelation 16:3: "And the second angel poured out his vial upon the sea; and it became as the blood of a dead man: and every living soul died in the sea."
The Bible is very clear on what the soul is. It is a person, it can swear, it can eat, it dies(it is not immortal), and animals are souls
Yes, you and I are living souls.

First point;
The soul is NOT in the body. A 'silver cord' forms the umbilical attachment joining the two entities.
Second point;
As the soul is not in the body, it finds release from 'conscious thought' and enters its natural spiritual state.
In this state, it reviews the lessons learned by the physical entity and seeks answers to questions still unresolved.
The silver breaks at the point of death, giving final release to the spirit and the soul.
That is another question you may care to ask?

I think I believe in astral projection and the astral (dream) plane and stuff, but I shout in myy sleep, so I must still be in there somewhere, right?
I'd like to AP, but i read in a Terry Pratchett book (fiction, so not exactly reliable) where the girls AP and a demon steps into her body. Thats why I'm hesitant about trying AP. But, to answer your question: No! Well, mayyybe....

I've heard the same loud buzzing noise during lucid dreaming that you are supposed to hear before an out of body experience so I am open to the idea.

I don't think my soul leaves my body while I sleep, and I don't see the connection with the afterlife.

what do you mean by the SOUL leaves your body? Are you referring to Astral Projection?
I guess it could be debated is i your soul or your spirit or ___________ that leaves your body when you astral project yourself. hmmm. food for thought.
Anyway, I think you are referring to the term astral projection. See the link below to learn more.
PS: The afterlife is something completely different.

It is called astral travel. There is a fine cord which stays connected to your body, so that your soul doesn't leave you completely.
