It's new and impressive, but it's chaos. We flew out of Bangkok on opening day, and 2 of our checked bags didn't make it to San Francisco, untill 2 days later. The aircon is not near working properly. It was very very hot in some places. But the whole place will be great in time. I love Bangkok.

Cheers!

Suvarnabhumi - The Hub of South East Asia
also known as (New) Bangkok International Airport (IATA: BKK, ICAO: VTBS)

Suvarnabhumi officially opened at 3:00am on September 28, 2006, taking over all flights from Don Muang. The first flight to arrive was Lufthansa Cargo flight LH8442 from Mumbai at 3:05am. [1] The first commercial arrival was from Japan Airlines at 3:30am. The first passenger arrival was Aerosvit flight VV171 from Kiev at 4:30am [2], and the first cargo departure was Saudi Arabian Airlines flight SV-984 to Riyadh at 5:00am. [3] [4] Aerosvit also had the first passenger departure (VV172 to Kiev) [5] around 5:30am.

Many difficulties were recorded the first few days. On the first day alone, sluggish luggage claims were rampant (the very first passenger arrival by Aerosvit took an hour for the luggage to start coming out, and some flight did not have their luggage coming out after four hours, many flights were delayed (Thai Airlines claimed that 17 of 19 flights were delayed that day, and there were also failures of the check-in system. Subsequent problems included the failure of the cargo computer system, and the departure boards displaying the wrong information, resulting in confused passengers (especially as unlike Don Muang, there were no "final calls" issued).

International travellers departing the airport must pay a 500 baht
($13 US) tax levied by the airport operator, Airports of Thailand. The tax is not included in the price of airline tickets. It is paid to airport staff before queuing for immigration processing. On February 1, 2007, the international departure tax will be raised to 700 baht ($19 US).

From what i have heard they are suffering some design flaws too.. only 100 seats [ this is hard to believe ] and 24 toilets [ also hard to believe ] - but that is what I have heard from friends... in addition to the newspaper reports of lost luggage etc.. so far, it does not sound like much improvement - - the interior design was described as "cold" - lots of square shaped metal.. mais oon -
