Salt and pepper shakers are so common in western households which can be associated to the fact that its popular use from its time of invention was among the westerns. It became an important accessory in their kitchens and became more popular as it emerged as one of collector's item made famous with Hollywood actors Glenn Ford and Bob Hope and poet Dorothy Parker being the early collectors. Many shaker sets are produced for the sole purpose of being a collectible and are rarely used to hold the condiment.

A salt and pepper shaker invented in the 19th century is a small container filled with salt or pepper that is used to sprinkle onto food. The screw-top salt shaker was invented by John Mason in 1858. Around 1871, when salt became more refined, some ceramic shakers were molded with perforated tops.

Early salt shakers were actually salt mills. They contained a piece inside the shaker that broke the salt into pieces. This feature may also be found in some salt shakers now.♥
