What is wierd is that it is not so much the money, as more of the action. For a gambler, being in action is similar to being high on cocaine for the person addicted to cocaine. Both describe their "drug of choice" as seductive and ultimately destructive.
Video poker and slot machines have been referred to as the "crack cocaine of gambling." Because of their immediate and effective reinforcement schedules, problem gamblers who regularly play these machines appear to progress into pathological gambling much faster than problem gamblers who only gamble at horse races, or other games that do not have such an immediate rate of gratification.
All in all, the thrill of making free money and the thrill of loosing your life...the ultimate high.

A gambling addiction is just like a smoking addiction, a porn addiction, a shopping addiciton or a drug addiciton.
The body releases endorphins. When someone is gambling the excitement of the win is what makes people want more.
All addicitons can be gotten rid of, through therapy or pure will power.

The same reason people get addicted to roller coasters and sex. The rush and thrill releases chemicals in your brain that make you feel good. Some people have a larger release of these endorphins and thus, it is much harder for them to quit.

Some people can play one hand of blackjack and walk away and still others have to play and play till they are way behind. Like drugs, some can just smoke that one joint and be fine, and others have the need to do it all day long and can't stop.

It is the easiest way to make money only if people could win the game continously. Most people have a dream of being rich...
Unfortunely, there is no lunch for free.

We are human. We are greedy when something free comes in our direction. Since it is free we figure why not get more. The thrill of getting a free hundred dollars, if not more, in your pocket is too hard to resist.
