As for today it has become a personal and informed consumer choice to not purchase genetically modified foods (that is because it was unleashed upon American consumers without the consent or public input).
A good informative book is "Seeds of deception".

Benefits: "Feed the world", however currently the world produces 3000 calories for every person (all 6.45 billion), so we don't need to produce more food but rather distribute it more efficiently.

Risks: Increased food allergens, Cross pollination (which happened in Mexico), Possible altering a main food source inedible, Increased use of herbicides and insecticides by industrial agriculture ( because said plant can 'tolerate' higher doses of chemicals)
