The plague of modern telecommunications is a thing called a powerdialler which can dial hundreds of numbers an hour. Often the people operating these things don't know what they're doing and they make it dial more numbers than their tele-agents can deal with. It's odd that one's left a trace number though because they're usually dialling from a digital trunk and don't have a DDI number however some companies are trying to get round anonymous call barring. Then again there is a current con-trick whereby you call back to these things and find yourself disconnected and five pounds poorer. Ring BT and tell them about it, they should be able to backtrack and if it is a con they can do something about it.

Some call centres have automated systems that dial a house and record if the phone is answered at a particular time. This information is then sold to "live" call centres who then have an idea of the time of day you are likely to be in.

Don't do it. There are loads of scams at the moment and when you call back you get charged huge amounts. If its someone genuine, they will call back.
