I used to have a cat that hiked through the woods with my children and me. He would follow along, sometimes off onto a little side excursion of his own, then along the path behind or even in front of us.
Thank you for posting this question; it has brought back alot of good memories!

My beautiful 7month old Bengal girl, Marbles loves nothing more than to go for a walk on her harness! She goes everywhere with us to the park, beach and out for a walk as often as we can take her. As she is an indoor only cat this gives her lots of exercise and stimulation. Being a cat she will stop for a nosy at anything that takes her fancy but she does walk brilliantly too. We have also trained her to use the toilet for #1 and #2s using the Litter Kwitter!
Next doors outdoor cat will follow us up the road when we go out for a walk too but only for about 250 yards.

I live in NYC, right next to Central Park, and I've seen quite a few people walking with their cats during the summer. Some have leashes, some don't, and some have the cat on their shoulder.
I think that it's pretty cool, but I would use a leash, jut in case something spooks them and they freak out/try to run away. It doesn't have to be a short leash, just something long a loose, so that you don't lose your furry feline friends. Have fun!

No I can confirm that your cats are not unique, my two cats and dog go for a walk down the lane with us when we walk. And i know of a cat that used to walk 2 miles to the sea with it's owner ,and have to be carried back as it was "tired" LOL

My cat how just died this august use to walk with us too. We walk on a trail by a creek and bagherra would follow us all, the kids, dog and I. When ever she would get too far back she would meow on the top of her lungs until we stopped and waited for her to catch up to us. I sure do miss her, she was a great cat!

Hi Jennifer...I admire your kitties for enjoying their walks with you. It's wonderful exercise and such a bonding experience as well. I also walk my two kitties, however on leash as we live in a busy city and cannot afford to take any chances with something or someone startling them off and away. Both also love our outdoor excursions as well as car rides to places to walk. We always look out of place when there are a lot of dogs walking with us. The dogs are just stunned as we pass by them.
Also our exotic cats (e.g. cougars, african servals, etc) really enjoy walks which are always on leash in their private reserves ;-). They are more dog-like and will follow us wherever we walk with them.

LOL...so whats the problem theres nothing wrong with that, though i would recommend putting them on a leash.
Sounds like that should be easy enough to train them to use since they already walk with you now.
You never know, something could startle them and cause them to run off or they could see something irresistible and take off a leash will keep them safe.

u must be a real wonderful owner to keep ur cats by ur side, unlike others who let them roam around unsupervised, and the next thing u know cat-hating people like me chase them out of their sanity. but u r real smart to watch over ur cats.
