Is it safe to live in a cheap hotel anywhere ?

Watch the areas! If you are staying in Manhattan, avoid the lower East Village around Canal Street ... where, of course, all the cheap hotels are! Why not go over the river to Brooklyn (cheap and safe). Subways in NYC are $1.50 a ride and you get a free transfer within two hours of buying the ticket so you can be out of town and get in easily. Check out Williamsburg too in case there are any good small hotels. If you decide to go further north then Harlem is ok - good hotels and restaurants.

Have a great trip!

I would not advise you to stay in a cheap hotel anywhere. For advise on places to stay contact the local tourist board of the city you are going to,(all countries have them). They will be able to tell you of the safest places and most often have price lists available to them.
