I think this quote means to not go where everyone else is going. So the path is a metaphor for where most people are going in their life. To go where there is no path, as in doing something that most people aren't doing, leave a trail means to make your path known. That the way everyone else is going isn't the only way to be successful, that the path you made for yourself is a choice too. I hope you understand my explanation. Good luck!

My interpretation of this quote is basically not to be afraid to forge your own destiny and with that, leave a distinct impression on society, history, etc. Be a leader, not a follower, and be true to your own aspirations which you must fulfill wholeheartedly no matter how unconventional they may be.
