You have a choice of just believing what someone tells you or reading it for yourself. Personally, I don't trust my soul to what some other person interprets. As for memorizing scripture, I don't see the point, I read the bible to answer my own questions.

:) Great question.
The trend amongst the logically minded (and you seem like the logical type) is that as knowledge of scripture increse, belief in the whole Christianity thing starts to decline. Read into the basic beiefs of the religion too deeply, and it all starts to fall apart, unless your a real zealot, in which case you will stop searching for truth within the scriptures and just adopt it all as truth. It will become your truth so to speak.
You can have a relationship with Jesus without being overly knowledgeable of religious texts. Heck, if being a Christian required an in depth knowledge of the scriptures, more than half a billion people would be out of a religion. You might want to thumb through the New Testament though (don't worry, it's actually pretty good reading), or at least one of the Gospels (Luke's is a nice one) . Then just proceed to wherever your interest takes you.

The scipture is one of our most important sources of knowlege about Jesus. It will be very difficult to know Jesus well without knowing at least the New Testament. It is true that the Holy Spirit speaks to us directly. But this knowlege comes to us in the form of an inspiration, like an intuition, and needs to be checked against scripture to make sure it is the real thing. You can't just trust every idea that comes into your head, can you? It is also important to have fellowship with other believers. You get ideas and feedback from them too. In the end, though, your own judgement and conscience will lead you; God gave you a brain for a reason.

The question, "How important is knowing Scripture, to being a practicing Christian?" That would be like me saying, "I am a Zen Master!" yet never open or understand what Zen truly is. That is just what a person is who claims to have a "Relationship" with Christ yet not know what Christ stood/stands for. Jon. 3: 16-17 states why God sent Christ and it is those who Believe to live as found in Jon. 13: 34-35. And know who you believe in, why and what you believe 2 Tim. 3: 16-17, and 2 Tim. 2:15. Because in Matt. 28: 18-20 for we are suppose to enlighten those around us. Matt. 5: 3-7: 1-27. Study on!

you have already indicated that a relational approach is your preference to an intellectual one. It is important to study the Bible and in so doing one will become familiar with it. However, people so often get hung up because of a literal approach to scripture. This is the foundation for many common mistakes in the church. So, study to show yourself approved, but let the heart lead and the mind follow. Use common sense and don't get too far removed from practical application of biblical themes. Don't let a love for the book turn you into an idealog. Stay in touch with common-sense and don't let biblical language transform your communication style; nobody relates to Christians who do that.

If you don't read scripture you aren't a practicing Christian you are just saved. How can you have a relationship with someone you know nothing about? Also you need to know what the Bible says so you don't get caught up in having someone else interpret his word for you. You can get led down the wrong path by some wacky individuals.

You can always have a relationship with Jesus no matter what but you really need to get to know what the Bible says. This is the hardest part for me becouse I'm always 'to busy' or I'll read Christian how to books and I fight with myself all the time about this. I sometimes just pick the Bible up just before I leave for work and read one passage and it's amazing what becomes of it!

Knowing the Word is VERY important becuase it is what helps us know God more. U can't have a realtionship with Him without reading the Bible becuase it has everything to tell u about God. And plus when u are evangelizing, u will ahve to be able to use scripture to asnwer someone, only if they ask regarding the scripture.

As Christians we need to be in God's word, or at least have it hidden away in our heart because the enemy is all around and he is seeking to devour whoever he may. The Bible is filled with instructions on how to live your life. If you don't know it and read it than how can you live your life the way God would want you to? And how can you obey him and know his commands? Also how can you defend the faith if you don't know the word? The Bible was written so that people could know the truth. It is an instruction manual showing us how to live life and how to please God. It tells us what to do and what not to do.
A Christian must have God's word hidden in their heart and the only way you can do that is by reading it and meditating on it.
God bless
