Yes, I have had cognitive behavioral therapy. I was very fortunate that I found an excellent therapist. It really helped me a lot. The premise is very simple: Take a situation that upset you and look at it objectively (the therapist helps you to do this). Was your response logical? Or were you reacting to something that had happened in the past, that didn't really have anything to do with the present situation? If you take that past experience out of the picture, what would have been the best reaction to the current situation?
This is very simplified, of course, but it gives you an idea of what cognitive behavioral therapy is like. You learn to stop and think before you react to situations (at least, most of the time :-/ ). And when you do get upset, after you calm down, you will know how to analyze the situation and figure out how to handle it in the future.
So I would say yes, it does prepare you to live a happy life. And it can help on low self-esteem issues. As far as stopping therapy, this is something that you can start and stop whenever you feel like it. When I am going through a stressful period, I may see my therapist for 4 or 5 sessions, then not see him again for a year or two. In the beginning, you go as long as you need to. After that, you may need a little help over some rough patches, but for the most part you should be able to handle things on your own.

Yes, research has shown that it is the best form of therapy. it can help you gain self esteem because the therapist talks to you about your negative feelings and says coping statements to change those negative thoughts. this is the "cognitive" part. the behavioral part is when the therapist actually takes you through some experience to overcome whatever you need to. for example, if you are afraid of heights, the therapist will gradually take you step by step and expose you to higher and higher heights as time goes by. eventually you won't be afraid of heights anymore. the same goes for self esteem. try it, it'll work. it'll help you develop positive outlooks on life.
try reading some books on self esteem too. that'll also help you cope.

Actually I have....When my mother died 8 years ago I couldn't seem to let her go. The therapy helped my take her from my head to my heart. After the therapy I was able to think about her and recall memories about her with out going into deep depression. It does work...like anything else you get out of it what you put into it. I do recommend giving it a try.

It works well. It helps you deal with issues without being told how to! It guides you towards looking at your thoughts, feelings and reactions and helps you address those at the basic level.
I found stopping was OK, no feelings of being abandoned because I had learned not to have those neg thoughts. It prepares you to live rather than cowering :D Good luck.

I've had it for PTSD and it really worked. The best bit is that I seem to have the potential for that sort of thought process anyway so it became second nature and I've never looked back, at least as far as the anxiety is concerned.

Each situation and therapist is different. It is something you have to base on your own life and what you give and get out of it.

i did therapy once...... i was like 14 and i never went back she told all my info to my dad..... i don't trust them
