to go travelling after uni? I was led to believe that students are skint what with a student loan to pay back and a maxed out overdraft, yet they go travelling to take time out after uni. I was speaking to a guy today who said he went travelling to Brazil, Thailand etc fter studying. Is travelling not as expensive as I think or something? I would love to go travelling but just cant afford it!

Yeah, travelling for a year something that I didn't do unfortunately but I had a friend that finished uni, with quite a lot of debt and then took a job for a year in a call-centre, getting all the extra shifts she could. She deferred her student loans as you only start paying them back once you earn over £15K a year (I think) so the money she earnt in the year after uni all went towards her trip. There are some student travel agents that can get a global flight ticket, she did work in Sydney for the last 6 months of the travelling year but the first 6 months she has loads of fun and stayed in hostels. My advice.....do it but work for a year first to get some money behind you, unless your parents are loaded, or you win the lottery it's the only physical way of doing it. You'll have a great time plus the experience will look great on your CV when you get back to starting work in the real world!

I always wondered about this, and I went travelling during UNI. I funded my travels by working abroad legally using a student exchange program where I had a legal work VISA to work in California by the beach for a summer. It was a temporary J1 visa in those days.

I had an overdraft when I left university, and certainly had no access to funds which would have allowed me to go travelling straight after university.

I did have some funds which I built up by speculating on the privatisations which were prevalent during my time at university. I also worked in frozen food factories, grain merchants, ice cream vending, amongst other more enterprising activities.

But yes, mummy and daddy did pay the same through a deed of covenant that everyone else got from the government in those days by way of a grant. Bear in mind though, that grants were about £2,000 a year. Which did go quite far if you lived in halls of residence.

I'm not sure where they get the money from but perhaps some of them get it paid for by way of an allowance from their parents as a reward for studying as hard as they have, if their parents are financially able to do so. I also think that some of them probably work their way around the different countries to experience life in other countries and to pay for the trip. Other than that they must have already been financially well off to start with before they went to Uni. Lucky people!!

Well, I know that they are not staying at the Ritz. They do it on the cheaps by staying with friends, student hostels, eating at mickeyd"s, wearing the same clothes etc... Also, they max out the credit cards that they give away in college.

I think you can get special student visas for some countries that allow you to work for short periods, that's one way of doing it. Some may also have rich parents.

Although someone has to give them $$ for airfare, many save by staying at the youth Hostels. They are super cheap and you meet lots of other travelers.
