We have a class that only meets 4 times in a semester and the next class isnt til mid november. So I wnated to send an email that said hey lets hang out prior to next class.

ask him for help in something - like a video game, sport, car, something you know he does or that you do but need a second person for. you can send an email but i would make sure it includes something like i mentioned above so that there is no way he could get the wrong impression of what you want to do. my son who is 22 says that he generally would ask for help in a specific thing to start a conversation/ friendship. he is straight by the way and no one has ever said they thought he was comming on to him.

Exactly, break the ice first. If you come straight out and ask to hang out then it would definitely be creepy especially if you've not spoken to him before.

well, i would think that if you asked another guy to hang out with you he wouldn't take it as being a date anyways...=)
