Since I was speeding 25mph above the speed limit, the ticket says that I can't take a defensive driving class anymore. However, it's my first offense, so do i have any chance to get the judge to let me take the class, or at least lower my fine? I'm a college student, and I was going home for fall break, kinda got too excited. Usually I don't drive that fast, I know it's very dangerous. But I don't have $300 for the fine, and I don't think fight it is a good idea.

You will need to go to court and explain to the judge. The judge has the authority to fine/sentence you to whatever (within reason of course). Explain to the judge that you are not debating as to yur guilt but that you are enrolled in college, don't have an excess amount of cash and would like to either go to defensive driving or community service. If that all fails then see if you can have the judge authorize a payment plan for you. Good Luck and please slow down.

I'd say you really NEED to let this teach you "responsibility", Respect for Speed Laws & a lesson, and just Pay it & ReMeMbEr this incident. I mean think about this, if the judge let you off or lowered your fine, you know for -Certain- there would _very likely_ be a 'repeat' of this, only next time it may be 116 mph. What if something went out of control with your car and you ran into something at that speed??
I can almost see it! Driving on a clear roadway, radio or CD BLASTING playing a favorite song that almost makes you forget where you are, and we just wanted to let out some excess hormones, so you used your :foot: thinking no one would know.

Yea, you were excited. I'm sure its a bit different for each state. Here in Oregon, going over 80 mph is reckless endangerment and you can be taken to jail. On the First Offense. But, it is the discrection of the officer to cite or take to jail based on your desposition and if you were endangering others (ie, kids in the car, passing other motorists). Your officer decided to cite you.
If this was your first offense then I do not understand why you would not be allowed to attend a defensive driving course. I would, however, recommend you go to court and explain yourself and like one of the other people mentioned, ask for the mercy of the court. Ask for the course and/or community service in leiu of a fine and or in leiu of a fine reduction.
This is why the insurance rate bracket for guys between 18-25 are the highest. Petal to the Metal Ba-By!!!...

I know in a lot of states going that far over the speed limit can also be classified as Reckless Endangerment. You may be able to get the ticket down a little, but I promise it will not get dropped all together.
Consider yourself lucky, I know in NC (where I live) they can and usually do take your license away from you on the spot if you're caught going that far over the limit, first offense or not.

when you go up to the judge tell him/her you put yourself on the mercy of the court , that you are just a college student living on about $500 a month and simply couldn't live with this fine . The mercy on the court line worked for me fro a mip when i was 20 , probably won't work but if you can get the judge to laugh your golden

Well the people before me have givin you good advice, but whatever you do don't cry. If i'm giving someone a speeding ticket and they start crying it makes me want to give it to them even more. The court judges are usually the same way.

Have you ever heard of responsibility??? Pay the dang ticket! You deserve it. Take a loan out if you have to. Dang, I'm only 20 but I know better than to go 96 MPH!!! It'll teach you to pay more attention in the future.
I bet your parents bought your car for you, didn't they?

Your best chance is to appear in court and tell your side to the judge.Be nice. It is up to him, he could dismiss all charges or charge full amount.
